Yes, he assassinated. That’s what assassins do, right? No, I don’t know what happens next but I expect the body count to rise! He isn’t a Disney character, after all. Well, yes, Robot 11-Three does look like a soda can. What’s your point? You’re just saying. You’re just saying! I give up! There’s no pleasing you! Everything everyone says about you behind your back is true! You don’t appreciate quality entertainment! You don’t deserve to read Kevin Kilgore’s Robot 11-Three! Go away. Wait, one more thing, Robot 11-Three reads this blog. I’m sure he didn’t take anything you wrote personal. He’s an assassin and I’m sure he's a very reasonable robot. Faily sure. A review... it has been a while since I actually sit down to write a movie review so apologies if I am a little rusty. First the "elephant" on the room, why bias? Well James Cameron stole my idea, wait I know what you are thinking I don't mean to say that him or one of his minions were spying in my window when I designed Nhulluz nor that he saw my character designs online and thought: wow if I put half a billion dollars into this it may pay off! What I mean is that he probably reached on that collective consciousness soup that we all share and fished it out with a rusty spoon. In any case if reports of him being working on this are true I probably stole it from him, the point is he did the movie first and I did the comic (The Caerulean Dream) before his movie was out so we are even right? So I will address what is similar and what is different in between so bare with me if you don't care.

The Review, spoilers wise if you haven't seen the movie go see it and then come read the review I am not going to hold back on juicy details I think there is enough out there so you can make a decision on to see or not to see on you own, when in doubt: "eyeball it".

This is a great movie, Cameron's first accomplishment is burring the mystical "Uncanny Valley" there is no such a thing in this film, every CGI character is full of life and personality if you just wake up from a comma and were no up to date on FX you will think they are real aliens. The 3D is gorgeous, I felt with other movies that it was only a two dimensional separation between foreground and backgrounds there is very little of that in here, to the point that you forget you are watching a 3D movie and you are just seeing that world. Characters Design wise here is were most of the overlap with The Caeruleas is first, you guessed it thy are blue but, they are also: tall, slender, agile, they have big round eyes, hair looks kind of like dreadlocks (they are really not), flat noses, long fingers, ear shape, etc. Differences: my characters have 5 fingers with two thumbs on each hand, they don't have feline eyes they are more like goat eyes, their mouths are bigger with complex jaws, their hair is not really hair but this thick chunks that grow out of their scalps, their body type varies a little more than the Na'vi, also all their joints are bendable in 360 degrees make them excellent climbers and jumpers in a way that is very different to humans. In other character designs notes I find it odd that all the animals in this world are constructed in a very different way, with four front legs but the Na'vi are not, I think the main reason for this is practical as an avatar how can a human control four arms? Having said all this the designs are outstanding, they convey their personalities their faces are different enough from each other that you can recognize them (most of the time), you can see how a human could trade with out blinking.The flora and fauna are very interesting, you can see were the base animals came from but they are not oversize versions of them, I really like the land sea-horse, the flora is probably nicer looking and more diverse than the fauna but more familiar to us too. The flying creatures shape was very similar to the ones in Starship Troopers but different enough up close. The world itself is outstanding, great balance and landscapes, this is another similarity with The Caeruleans their world is a low gravity moon in a gas giant system. I was expecting a little more variety on the other tribes habitat but there was not much time to explore it.

Plot wise I found it the weakest point of the movie, I will skip the comparisons with Dances with the Wolves, The Last Samurai and District 9 but there is plenty. Even when trying to show a point of view different from their own I think american directors can not stop themselves from putting the all american boy in the middle, it is being self center when you have to be both the hero and the villain? or just narcissistic? A good way of putting the lack of originality on the story is to say that is a mix of Battlestar Galactica and Princes Mononoke. I think the biggest challenge when creating an Alien spices is how to handle it, do you base it on a long lost culture, do you just go east or you skip the creative process on based on you own? It's hard the risk you take when you base it on a lost or heavily genocided culture is to make a mockery of their belief system in this case being: so the Na'vi are similar to the native Americans but all their "crap" about being connected to their land is true. Please don't quote me on that with out a context. I guess the Na'vi are more spiritual than The Caeruleans but they share the reverence for balance and nature in The Caeruleans is based on practicalities of survival something we could learn from. The acting is the other bright start in this movie, it's what helps smash the uncanny valley and bring the story together, the way they talk, body language and guttural reactions give them a personality package that is not rooted on language or references but in the gut reactions that we all feel making it different from ours but still keeping us connected to it. I smell an Oscar or too... oh wait that is just my feet. I hope Cameron makes a bunch of this movies and leaves the humans out of a couple of them, you really don't need them. And when the Holo-decks becomes a reality I know this will be their Minesweeper. Awesome movie in the near future when I get around to make a proper Caerulean Movie I may consider hiring the young Jimmy Cameron to do some doodles for me he seems to know what he is doing, go see it so he can keep making his movies till then and thanks for reading my ramblings let me know if you have an opinion.

"Hunter Prey" A Stunning First Look!

Fanfilm auteur Sandy Collora is a legend. In 2003 he released a tiny-budget short about Batman (Dead End) whose gritty stylishness anticipated Dark Knight by years. Now his first original feature, Hunter Prey, is finished - and we saw it. I don't want to spoil Hunter Prey for you too much, but suffice to say it's a twisty thriller that will remind you a little bit of Enemy Mine and (surprisingly) of Treasure of Sierra Madre. There is no "treasure" per se, but Collora's tale of shifting loyalties among a group of aliens and their prisoner - stranded after a crash on an alien world - brings to mind classic movies about desperate, selfish men in who would rather die than work together to survive. Shot on a microscopic budget in Mexico, the film's concept design is fantastic. Collora's greatest strength lies in creating settings of rich depth and designing characters who simply kick ass. It's easy to forget you're watching what is basically a labor of love when the design is so stunning and cool. Hunter Prey asks a question that has preoccupied a lot of recent science fiction, from Doctor Who to the new Star Trek movie: When somebody has exterminated your whole planet, what do you do? One of Hunter Prey's characters is the only remaining member of his species, and a large part of the film is about whether he's justified in trying to exterminate the species that committed genocide against his own. So when can you see it? Collora has just completed the movie, and is working out details on a distribution deal, but hopefully you'll have a chance to look at it in 2010. For now, revel in these exclusive stills from the movie.

This is the cover for a comic that will be included in the next Outbound anthology which is being put out by River Bird Studios. The Fallout Parade is something of a postapocalyptic comedy which is a bit of a different direction for me. Outbound is all science fiction, so the Fallout Parade is science fiction only science fiction the way I would do science fiction.

Whatever that means.

Anyway, the next issue of Outbound should be coming out sometime near the beginning of next year.

So, as we get close to November we are starting work on Issue #2 of Outbound, All the stories featured on #1 will continue and we will add some new ones. If you want to participate and have not contacted me so far you may do so at outbound@aerealcity.com. We are looking for continuing stories that are Science Fiction. We are also interested on Short Fiction stories and other things like games, puzzles crosswords etc. If you are a letterer, inker of toner please let me know we can put you to work.In other Outbound news, we were listed on DCBService.com and good amount of books at a 40% discount. BOSTON COMICS ROUNDTABLE AND RIVER BIRD STUDIOS PRESENT OUTBOUND, A SCIENCE-FICTION COMICS ANTHOLOGY

BOSTON, MA (MAY 8, 2009) – The Boston Comics Roundtable, in partnership with River Bird Studios, is pleased to announce the release of the premier issue of Outbound, a Science Fiction anthology. Outbound is a spin-off of sister publication Inbound, the anthology of comics from Boston. Outbound contains comics and short stories from a mix of Boston-based creators and artists all over the world, from Australia to South America, including a cover from talented Uruguayan artist Marcelo Buchelli.

Outbound #1 retails for US$ 6.99 and is available in every comic book retail location in the greater Boston area and online at http://OutboundMagazine.blogspot.com/. Outbound is also distributed nationally by Direct Comic Book Service http://www.dcbservice.com/ and Heavy Ink http://heavyink.com/.

The Boston Comics Roundtable was created in 2006 and has produced three issues of the Inbound comics anthology. I grew up deep in the Louisiana bayou. Raised by prawn I spent most of my early life illiterate and carefree. When I discovered the written word I was instantly smitten and moved to the fast paced city of Boston, where I work as a grocer and write stories on the side. I have gotten stories published in the now defunct BostonNow magazine, as well as on my own website, www.ikindoflikejoe.com. This Summer I plan to continue my annual tradition of writing letters to the actor Jon Lovitz in a series called "Summer of Lovitz".

Joe was kind enough to submit his story to Outbound #1, which will be accompanied by a gorgeous illustration by Paul Marquis.

The mundane and the extraordinary are celebrated equally in two stories by Aya Rothwell.
In “Mark and the Aliens,” Mark has crashed his ship on an alien planet. His dire concern seems to be that he can’t get anyone’s names or faces right, among the locals. Will he ever succeed?
In “How I Learned to Tolerate Vegemite,” a young college intern gains valuable experience in the corporate environment. Acquired skill sets includes organizing the workplace; working in a team setting; eating Vegemite and traveling through time. Undoubtedly, this will help her job searching process, when she graduates from school.
About the Author:“Mark” was initially drawn when Aya was working as a production assistant on film sets in New York City (and living out of a backpack). She sketched the story during a day off. Then Aya moved back to Boston to live more normally, where she re-drew the story. Regarding “Vegemite,” Aya was recently asked if it was a true story. “Oh, no,” she replied. “I still don’t like the taste of Vegemite. I never did learn to tolerate it.”

About Eric Boeker:
Ever since he can remember, Eric Boeker has wanted to grow up to be a cartoonist, which is why he (like all other aspiring cartoonists) studied German Literature and grew up to be an engineer. Thanks to the recent zombie invasion in corporate America, he has finally found an outlet for his repressed cartoonist tendencies. He documents the trials and tribulations of the ever-growing, Generation-X, coffeehouse-loving, zombie horde in the "Commute of the Living Dead".

Michael A. Burstein won the 1997 Campbell Award. His short fiction, collected in I Remember the Future, has been nominated for ten Hugos and three Nebulas. He and wife Nomi live in Brookline, Massachusetts, where he is a Library Trustee and Town Meeting Member. He has two physics degrees, and attended Clarion.

As you all know our publication will feature a prose section featuring new and ground breaking short fiction authors. To this end we welcome Michael to our team and look forward to read his contribution on the upcoming Outbound #1.

This is the deadline for Comic Stories proposals only (short description and art sample) to clarify the artwork does not have to be complete by this time, but you should send in the ideas you have.

The deadline for the finished stories is a month after that (April 15th). And also for anything else you would like to submit: Prose short stories, games, ads, letters, etc.

David Marshall's work has been published by Fantagraphics Books (Street Music), SpiderBaby Graphix (Taboo) and FantaCo Enterprises (Gore Shriek). He is also a three-time participant of 24-Hour Comics Day. When not doing comics, David runs his one-man creative services company Marshall Art Studio. He has over 20 years of experience in web design + development, print design, illustration and overall content beautification.

About the Story:

PG, Sci-Fi/Action/Adventure. A lone agent travels through a UNIX landscape, deep into enemy territory, fight an army, rescue a damsel in distress and save the world. Dot dot slash.

This is the plan:

- Color Cover.
- BW (HQ Digital) Interior pages.
- Size 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" x 64 Pages (Trimmed).
Content:
- 1 Painted Cover (the shown cover is just a mock up).
- Short Ongoing Stories that can be either 8,12 or 16 pages BW (w/screen tones).
- All short stories get a page for an inside cover (included in the page count).
- 1 to 3 pages of prose science fiction (it can be one story or a few short stories with a illustration).
- Fake adds for gadgets of the future or DIY robot kit.
- The overall feeling and mood of the book resembling Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine (Google it if not familiar).
- Introduction by a real life scientist (if we think is good, I am sure we can find one).

Submission & Deadline:
- First issue out May 2009. All pages in by April 8.
- If you are submitting your story you should have a short description of the series (what is is about, etc) and the proper story.
-For Prose just write it down limiting the size to one or two pages (consider we can play with font size and room for illustration).
